Today's Topic Talk is a bit delayed, but it's one I've wanted to talk about, because after seeing Solo: A Star Wars Story, I feel like I had a big perspective change on what I wanted with the Star Wars movies, so...let's get to the shocking discussion!
Okay, not that shocking.
~~~
So, before getting to spoilers, I came into the movie not expecting much. I was never a big fan of Han Solo as a character. He was fine, and I've grown to like him more as I've gotten older, but he never was that appealing to me. So naturally, I wasn't really excited for the movie about him. It is a prequel and basically an origin story for his character, which I normally like, but I still wasn't completely caught into the hype. I really just went to see it because it's a Star Wars movie.
But after seeing it...well, it was inspiring enough to make me want to write about it. :P
Solo: A Star Wars Story is not a mind-blowing experience, but it is an experience that is fun and does work as an origin story. That said though, I did see the movie by myself, so I haven't really had an opportunity to really get into talking about the movie, especially with the concept of spoilers. Since I want to talk about that...and you might not...bye!
Or you could just watch the movie and come back to read this. If so, I'll wait.
Alright, I think that's enough spacing for safety's sake...so, let us spoil that ending!
So uh...yeah, Darth Maul. Wow. So, I think some people were really surprised he's alive, but less appearing in a live action movie again, but if you've kept up with the cartoons (which are canon), you know he's survived his "death" in Episode I, and was just kind of bouncing around since then in various states of...distress? For lack of a better word.
So I wasn't surprised he was alive, rather that he was in the movie at all. Even without the cartoon revealing he's been alive since, it's crazy to see him come back into live-action. I'm excited to see more of the Star Wars spinoff movies now just because of that move. It was the first thing I saw out of these movies that made me feel like there was a solid plan in place, or at least solidus in design. Granted, I could be wrong and Maul was thrown in last minute, but either way, it's an inspiring move.
The key though, is what they do next with him. One thing for sure is he has to be used carefully, since by the time of the Original Trilogy, Jedi, Sith, and Force related stuff in general is going from factual to mythical in terms of population awareness. Han Solo specifically isn't really a believer in all of that, yet if he met Darth Maul...that would be harder to argue against.
This does bring up another point though, in that I feel the Darth Maul reveal is a really noteworthy thing and makes the movie seem more interesting, since it does give you another reason to watch it and see how characters like Qi'ra and Dryden act...but you can't really tell anyone about Maul unless they're okay with spoilers. It's tough to really hype up the movie in that way, and really, in the end of it...the movie shouldn't be that hyped anyway.
As much as I liked this movie, I think it was treated a bit too importantly. In other words, it's good for a spinoff, but it should not be viewed as more than that. Not something to rival the main series of movies, but something enjoyable that's worth seeing. I think the budget for the movie and the marketing might have gone against that, and it would be a shame if Disney took the reception of this movie and didn't make more spinoff movies.
After seeing this, I want more. Give me that Obi-Wan movie. Give me more movies to show what's up with Darth Maul and Qi'ra.
But whatever, I'm hyped for Star Wars, and look forward to seeing more soon.
Sincerely,
Lan Prower Kopaka
