Well...it's been a while. Especially for doing Today's Topic Talk. I've been wanting to do these for a while, just to get my thoughts out there, but I've been busy with offline stuff, and I just never had a major excuse to come back.
UNTIL TODAY!
UNTIL TODAY!
Yeah, that...final trailer? Huh...well, it's interesting to say the least. There is a lot to say though, so...let's get to it!
Firstly, let's get into things I liked, things I didn't like, and then end with a crazy wacky theory that MIGHT be true. Maybe. We'll get there.
So, what did I like? Well, it's nice to see Rey training. It's...weird that she's needing training like this, but maybe there's a reason.

I also really love the throne here. I've heard it's based on old concept art, and it's pretty cool and menacing. People have also pointed out it looks uncomfortable, but that's the price you pay for cool chairs...maybe that's why villains with cool chairs go bad. :P
I also like this next bit, it's kind of sweet. It's not a full team of six, but it's close, so I appreciate this a lot. I wish Episode VII and Episode VIII could have had moments like this.
Plus, even though the Death Star II chunks should probably be vaporized...this is a pretty cool moment. It's only downside is apparently this ISN'T the forest moon of Endor, but we'll get to that later.
I also like this bit too; even though Finn's a bit boisterous as usual, seeing C-3PO do a bit of a cheer too is funny. :P
And of course, a zillion people have pointed out this area being so intact makes no sense either...but, at the same time, it is cool to see this old ruin, and I'm sure some weird handwaving can explain why it survived. It's a cheap move, but it's a cool place to have a scene.
This next bit...is weird, but cool. Like, why is he helmeted? Where are they? Is that Darth Vader's helmet pedestal from Episode VII? Weird...but it's cool, so I'll put it here. :P
Alright, well, enough of the niceties. What bothered me? Well...a few things. :P
For one, I know this is meant to be seen as a "Oh hey, the heroes have backup!" But...it kind of looks like a bunch of pilots stuck in traffic because the Falcon cut them off.

It's nice to see some references with some of the ships, but it just makes me think, 'Where were you guys in Episode VIII?' Hopefully whatever their reason for not showing up in that movie was is a good reason.
Secondly, let's look at this ocean again.
Secondly, let's look at this ocean again.
One would think this is the forest moon of Endor, since that's where the Death Star II was orbitting. Supposedly, this is actually a different moon called Kef Bir. I'm not sure what the wreckage is here, how close these two moons are, why Kef Bir gets a name but not the forest moon, or if this ocean is even an ocean (if it was, all the parts should be sunk I'd think), but...that's what we're dealing with here.
I'm hoping they'll explain all this in the movie, but...there's so much in this movie, I'm not sure if they'll have time to.
In any case, let's move on to a third bit that bothered me: C-3PO's death?

It seems like it at least...though we know that this scene from a prior trailer is supposed to happen too, supposedly after this moment, so I don't think he's dead.
I don't know WHAT this means, but I would hope he's not dead. You shouldn't be killing him or R2. That just doesn't feel right, not unless you're killing EVERYBODY. Which...maybe that happens. Maybe they go Deathly Hallows on this. I guess we'll see.
Alright, so one more bit that bothered me was...this:

Like having a running cavalry bit here is okay, it's not illegal to have in Star Wars or anything, but...it feels kind of silly to me to have this in the "End of the Saga." Granted, I don't think they'll end the saga permanently (an Episode X is too much of a money making temptation), and I'm sure context could justify something as insane as riding into a battle on mounts on top of a Star Destroyer.
Either way though, I still think it's weird, and I think it would have been a more triumphant feeling to keep this out of trailers and show up when the movie is designed to show it. But...we'll see if it even works in that.
Alright, now let's get to my stupid crazy theory. So, we have this shot in this trailer.

Most likely the figure in the cloak is Darth Sidious, aka Emperor Palpatine. He's been talking all in the trailers, but for whatever reason this is the only time we see him, and even then we can only see his cloak and two fingers. He's somehow walking forward, and it's enough to make Rey walk back nervously, without a weapon drawn.
My theory is that the reason for all this is because...this is actually who she sees:

Now, I don't know if this means this "Dark Side Rey" IS the emperor, or if the emperor just made a bunch of clones that look like Rey that he's controlling...but I think that's what they're going for. Especially because of this from Episode VIII:
Ever since Episode VII, I was wondering what was Rey's deal. There was way too much focus on "There has been an awakening," and "What girl?" Then you get this weird scene in Episode VIII and it's clear there's a big mystery to solve here.
My original theories were either she was a Sith superweapon (in some of the canon books, Sidious has a weird fascination with Jakku, and it's implied he really wants something there), or a new Chosen One to take over for Anakin, or even that she was an inaccurate clone of Luke/Anakin/Palpatine (and she does have a similiar stabbing fighting style to Sidious...hmm...). This scene in Episode VIII made me feel confirmed on the clone theory, but there was a lot of talk after Episode VIII's release to say she wasn't meant to be anything special. Well, when I see scenes like this...

She's clearly special. :P
In any case, I may be going too far in assuming Sidious is Dark Side Rey, but I feel like he's at the very least making a bunch of Rey clones. This would explain why Rey is so powerful and why she's looking timorous in that trailer shot with Sidious. This all could amount to nothing, to be fair, but...it would be insane if any of this was to come to pass. So...we'll see if I'm right. ;)
Sincerely,
Lan Prower Kopaka
